WELCOME

As an author, field illustrator and journaler, I specialize in a literary and visual approach to the natural world.

Discover the natural world through the arts, and the arts by observing nature. I introduce natural science to all audiences, and natural scientists to the tools of artists and writers.

Natural history and art enhance and multiply
the ways of knowing our beautiful world.

Through this website, learn how my personable, one-on-one teaching style offers a unique approach to each of these disciplines. Realize your own creative potential through my writers’ workshops: I teach creative writing to all levels, from new writers to masters courses for the Whidbey Island Writers’ Workshop MFA program. Traveling to many locales across the West, I teach for national park institutes, colleges, public schools and in private homes.

By exploring my site you’ll find samples of my workshops and images from my own journal pages. Read testimonials from people whose creative lives were enhanced by my teaching and by others who’ve enjoyed my publications.

Review my published works and see how my own experiences in this tandem approach to the arts and sciences have translated into essays and books -- exploring Alaska, wild rivers, and California deserts.

Talented teen writers enjoy my unusual approach to the subject matters I teach. Adults awakening their own creativity may take their prose or poetry to a higher level through my unique style of tutoring. Writers with ongoing projects benefit from my experience as a published author.
